Throughout life people will say thing to you that can tear down your self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-respect. If you know how to properly “consider the source” you can determine which feedback to keep and which feedback you should discard.
In my own personal experience, prolonged verbal abuse can damage the victim’s self-worth and self-esteem. It is also my opinion that it can cause problems for the victims in interpersonal relationships with others, and if not addressed, verbal abuse can have a long-lasting (possibly permanent) negative impact on the victim’s life.
My father was a good provider for our family. He always made sure that I received the best medical care for my health problem that were caused by my birth defects. Unfortunately, his good qualities were always dwarfed by his verbally abusive words our family endured for decades.
