All of us have made mistakes in our lives. We have all said things, turn down opportunities and had epic meltdowns that have set us back. One of the first feelings we have afterwards is regret and remorse followed by the question, what do I do next?
I have had more setbacks in my life than I care to admit to publicly – or even privately. It took me years to discover the 5 steps to overcome any setback and make a comeback.
1 – Forgiveness
You must first be able to forgive yourself and anyone else who may have contributed to the setback. Forgive yourself for your part of your setback. Do not blame others for your actions. Do not forget to forgive anyone else for what they did (or didn’t do) that contributed to your setback. You don’t have to tell them you forgive them, but you need to forgive them in your heart and mind if you want to move forward.
Remember, we are all human and humans make mistakes. After all, nobodies perfect.
2 – Learn the lessons
It has been said that we learn more from our mistakes than we do from our successes.
Look for the lesson that you can learn from the setback. Study the lesson and you might discover a better way to handle a similar situation in the future. The lesson you learn will either help you avoid another similar setback or show you, after your next setback, how to minimize damage to your relationships or career.
3 – Let go
After forgiving yourself and others and discovering the lesson that was learned from your setback, it is time to let go of the past and start looking towards the future. You can not change the past, but you can start influencing your future.
4 –Be laser focused
Don’t let your setback – or anything else for that matter – stand between you and your goals. Block out any distractions, including annoying people or naysayers who want to tell you that what you want to achieve cannot be done.
Remember, any goal you set for yourself can be achieved if you want it badly enough to work hard enough to make it happen.
Now go out there and show the world that the setback that happened yesterday was really today’s setup for tomorrows comeback – and you will come back stronger than ever because you were made stronger by the setback!
